Hygienic DESIGN – making the difference

The use of standard operating parts that comply with Hygienic DESIGN requirements is an indispensable part of hygiene-sensitive production methods. Hygienic DESIGN – standardised design regulations
The phrase “Hygienic DESIGN” reflects the fundamental design regulations of the relevant machine components. Standard and operating parts that comply with Hygienic DESIGN criteria must have a smooth surface so that product residue and dirt are extremely easy to remove or simply unable to adhere in the first place. However, clean and hygienic production processes are not only crucial for the self-protection of manufacturing companies in the hygienic sector in order to prevent risks, costly loss of production and damage to reputations. According to the German Equipment and Product Safety Act (GPSG), which complies with the European Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), any companies affected by this are required by law to comply with these legally binding regulations.
The statute is precisely formulated and makes explicit reference to the requirements of Hygienic DESIGN. Amendment 1.2.1 of the Machinery Directive, for example, regulates factors such as the cleaning and design of surfaces and fasteners. Furthermore, instructions on drainage of liquids and contamination risks must be taken into account, and certain operating materials are addressed. Examples of risks particularly affecting hygiene-sensitive production areas are also listed.
